Asthma treatment

What is Asthma ?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways in the lungs. This inflammation periodically causes the airways to narrow, producing wheezing and breathlessness sometimes to the point where the patient gasps for air. This obstruction of the air flow either stops spontaneously or responds to a wide range of treatments. Continuing inflammation makes asthmatics hyperresponsive to such stimuli as cold air, exercise, dust, pollutants in the air, and even stress or anxiety. There are several ways of asthma treatment.

Between 16 and 17 million Americans have asthma and the number is rising. As many as 9 million U.S. children under age 18 may have asthma.  In an asthma attack, the muscle tissue in the walls of the bronchi go into spasm, and the cells that line the airways swell and secrete mucus into the air spaces. As a result, an asthmatic person has to make a much greater effort to breathe.

When it begins ?

Asthma usually begins in childhood or adolescence, but it also may first appear in adult life. While the symptoms may be similar, certain important aspects of asthma are different in children and adults. When asthma begins in childhood, it often does so in a child who is likely, for genetic reasons, to become sensitized to common allergens in the environment. There are several ways of asthma treatment.

As such, the treatment goal is often to restore balance to and strengthen the entire body and provide specific support to the lungs, immune and hormonal systems. If you have Asthma you can help yourself by keeping a diary of asthma attacks in order to determine environmental and emotional factors that may be contributing to their condition.
